Background:
Tyra Calinn was a Bajoran teenager involved in the Resistance movement during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. Calvin Styraan was a human freighter pilot who helped the Resistance by smuggling arms and supplies onto Bajor and by disrupting the Cardassians as much as possible. Tyra was one of several young women who were captured and accused of conspiracy against the Cardassians and sentenced to serve as ‘slaves’ on the space station DS9 under the command of Gul Dukat.

It was during the transport of these ‘prisoners’ that Styraan hijacked the transporter and rescued the Bajoran women. Being the oldest of these women, Tyra Calinn was the most outspoken and demanded that Styraan take them back to Bajor where they could continue their fight. Instead he took them to the secret ally base to where other Resistance fighters had escaped and from where they had managed to effectively disrupt Cardassian supply freighters amongst other things. Commander Styraan was immediately taken with the young Bajoran and before long they were married, and Calinn joined her husband on his ‘freighter’ in his resistance activities.

In 2349 their only daughter was born, Trysta Styraan. Her mother tried to teach her Bajoran ways, but it was difficult because of the life they led. When she was four her parents left her with her human grandmother who was a criminal psychologist in a maximum security prison on Metebelis Six. It was here that she attended school and became fascinated with the workings of the criminal mind.

When she was eight, she learned that her mother and father had both been captured by the Cardassians and executed for their ‘crimes’. This left Trysta an orphan and she remained in her grandmother’s care. But she felt strongly the call of her Bajoran side. At the age of 14 she stowed away upon a parting medical supply vessel bound for Bajor. It was intercepted and its occupants captured. Trysta was taken to DS9 where she was to go before the fierce Gul Dukat. But even on DS9 there were friends who tried to help. One of these was a kindly Cardassian who risked his own life to free Trysta and a few other women from the supply vessel. This is where she learned that things aren’t always as they seem outwardly. She owed her life to this Cardassian and vowed to never forget it. Trysta stowed away again on another ship bound for Bajor and thus made her way back to her mother’s planet where she had roots but had never been.

Here she joined the Resistance and met her only living relative on her mother’s side, her Aunt Tyra Mazil. This is where she learned about the Bajoran spiritual beliefs that would sustain her throughout her adult life. Although she fought the ‘Cardies’ every chance she got, she never shared the dire hatred that seemed to consume all the others in her group. In 2367 Mazil was killed in a tunnel collapse along with several others in her group. Trysta decided that there had been enough death and began to devote herself to the care of the sick and infirm, often using what she had learned by her human Grandmother’s side to counsel those worst affected by the fighting.

In 2369 the Cardassians ended their occupation of Bajor and Starfleet moved in to take over DS9 and help Bajor recover from the occupation. Trysta met with people from Starfleet and was persuaded to apply to attend Starfleet Academy even though she was 20 by now.

She graduated from the Academy and decided to pursue her career along the lines of her Grandmother. She studied at the best Psychological school on Earth, and then on Io. She has often been called upon to help with prisoners and terrorists because of her keen, and often spooky, understanding of the criminal mind.

Personality Profile:
Trysta is open and friendly but will not stand for injustice or malice towards others. She has an uncanny ability to ‘see’ into the minds of the criminally insane, and has great insight into the workings of the traumatised mind. Her kind, gentle manner has often been relied upon to soothe even the most savage criminal.

As bright as she may appear on the outside, she is often quite shy and reserved when she’s not in a work related situation. She is afraid of personal relationships and often suffers from nightmares because of the nature of the people she deals with on a daily basis. She loves animals and, in spite of her war-strewn background, loves people from all races and species, even Cardassians. She believes in judging people as individuals and not as a group. She never has forgotten that although Cardassians did horrible things and killed her parents, she herself owes her life to a very kind Cardassian man. Probably as a result of this rare kindness, she has developed a strange fondness for them. She has never had a long term or serious relationship with a man as she has either been too afraid or too wrapped up in her work. She is studious and dedicated often accused of being a workaholic. She genuinely cares about those around her and in particular her patients.
